Mustard gas has possibly been around since 1822, the chemists Cesar-Mansuète Despretz had claimed it to be a reaction between sulfur dichloride and ethylene. It wasn't until 1860 when British scientist, Frederick Guthrie had synthesized and characterized the mustard gas compound. The mustard gas that was successfully made was not used until 1917 when the germans used it at the battle of Ypres. This was also the first time that a deadly chemical gas was used. Because of this gas chemicals were being created and used on the battlefield.
